SARAJEVO

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is known as a place where East meets West. In the European Jerusalem, as many call it, you can visit mosques, Orthodox and Catholic churches and synagogues. The most famous are the Bey's Mosque, Old Orthodox Church, the Cathedral of Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Jewish Synagogue.

The most interesting part of Sarajevo is the Old Town, with Bascarsija square built in oriental style, full of small handicraft shops producing original hand-made products. In period 1992 to 1996 Sarajevo was under siege for 1425 days, the longest in the world's history. You can experience a little of the atmosphere from that period by visiting a war museum "Tunnel". Sarajevo's cultural side can be explored by visiting art galleries, theatres and festivals.

One of the most famous and best contemporary architects Renzo Piano has set the exhibition 'Ars Aevi' in Sarajevo that has the World's most significant collection of modern Arts in Southeastern Europe. Every year in the summer, Sarajevo Film Festival attracts a large number of film lovers, and has become the largest film festival in Southeastern Europe.

Other destinations

In 1984 Sarajevo was the host and the organizer of the 14th Olympic Winter Games. Even today, the Olympic mountains Bjelasnica, Igman, Jahorina and Vlasic attract large numbers of visitors. You can visit and learn about not only the mountains, but also other attractions in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Old Bridge in Mostar, a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, bridge of Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic in Visegrad, Srebrenica, Pocitelj, the Valley of the Pyramids in Visoko, Buna and Blagaj.
